Tomato Info

Tomatoes are used in so many dishes from around the world. There are countless recipes that include the versatile tomato as a main ingredient or as a base for its recipes.

The tomato plant was originally cultivated in Peru and Mexico area. The tomato plant was originally cultivated in the tropical climates of Chile or Ecuador, where it grew all year long. In 1544, an Italian herbalist named Pietro Matthioli put the tomato in the classification of poisonous plants because of it contained solanina, which was thought to be harmful at the time. He did this, despite the fact that he had heard the fruit was eaten fried in oil in some regions of Italy. Today of course, we know better. Tomatoes are grown all over the world. The word tomato is almost the same in nearly every language, except for Italian. The word tomato derives its originations from the Aztec word for "the plant". Italy calls the tomato "pomodoro".
