The Easy Way to Make Home Made Bread

The Wonderful Whiff of Home Made Bread

Yeast is a very important ingredient in bread, that helps the bread to rise.

Yeast is a single celled living organism that acts as a catalyst to help dough expand. Yeast multiplies very quickly when it comes in contact with warmth and moisture. The combination of yeast with sugars and starches, creates a chemical reaction that produces alcohol and carbon dioxide as by products.

The gluten in bread, which is elastic, traps the bubbles of the carbon dioxide and give the dough the ability to expand. The dough becomes airy and fluffy as it rises.

Because yeast is a living organism, it can expire. Keeping yeast refrigerated, helps yeast to stay fresher longer. In the freezer, yeast can last up to 1 year.

If you are not sure if the yeast is fresh, there is a simple way to test it. Take 1/2 tsp of sugar and put it in a bowl filled with water, so that the yeast and sugar dissolve. If it foams up and it bubbles up, within 10 minutes, the yeast is active and fresh.

There are primarily 2 different kinds of yeast: active dry yeast, or fast rising yeastActive dry yeast is the the kind that is most often used in baking bread. Fast rising yeast, does what the name says and helps the dough to rise faster.

Be sure to store it in an air tight container and in a cool, dry place. Yeast, if left out in the open will attract moisture, which will make it become active and not usable.
